My experiences as a Music Voice Engineer

For any kind of singing, one needs an appropriate voice culture. Voice - the amalgam of sound and mechanics, awaaz and gala (hindi/urdu), kural and thondai (tamil). My interest in voice engineering (more loosely called voice culture) began in 1981, when I lost my singing voice as a 24 year old Indian classical vocal student at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy at Kolkata. Due completely to erroneous training and practice methods. Of course, I will admit that I contributed in good measure to the confusion with my desire to switch over effectively from Carnatic culturing to a sound that would 'sound Hindustani music'. And paid for all the distortions dearly. June 15 1981, I opened my mouth to sing - no voice!!!

I sang again on the 6th of October 1993 - after more than 12 years of agony and ecstasy - ending up working with some really fascinating people - Peter Calatin, my final saviour and my first Indian voice teacher to whom I owe my perspective for the Indian voice of the future - the late Pt. Sunil Bose.

I learnt voice science only to regain my own voice - but have ended up pretty much a voice trainer. You can see a lot of my work now on the Airtel Super Singer Junior 2 that is being aired Monday to Thursday, 9 to 10 PM Indian Standard Time, on Star Vijay TV, Chennai.

I have been on this show all four seasons and this show remains my favourite space, over all the other major shows I have taught voice on - Indian Idol 4, K for Kishore, Jhoom India, Sitaron ko Choo Lenge and Zee Saregamapa (Kannada). No other show has put the subject of voice engineering and my face with such courage on the core space of the show - the set. After quarter of a century of work the subject of voice science, voice culture and voice engineering, seems to be getting its due.

Would like to share a lot about the details of this subject, its features and benefits for Indian vocalists of all genres, styles, ages and levels on this blogsite. I invite generous contributions in terms of sharing of problems, ideas, information about other experts who are working on this subject, professional singers who are interested in voice as a science and young musicians who dream of taking voice as a specialisation in India.

I on my part will share theoretical, practical and aesthetic data collected over decades - including voice critiques of great Masters - Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, M.S.Subbulakshmi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishor Kumar, Asha Bhosle, S.P.Balasubramanian et al - all my favourites.

Looking forward to loads of fun,

Ananth Vaidyanathan

  2. Hi friends,

A few days back a Carnatic music website - Carnaticdarbar.com interviewed me. This site has been create by Mr.KT Jagannathan, who is associated with the financial wing of The Hindu, but is a great music enthusiastic. He asked me some interesting questions when he visited. My responses are on their site - I thoguht I will copy the questions here sequentially for those who may be interested.

    What is `voice culture'?
Voice culture is the ‘unlocking’ of the natural potential of the human singing voice. The singing voice cannot and need not be ‘constructed’. It exists as genetic potential in terms of general structure in the human organism and as specific potential in the musically talented. Voice culture proceeds to awaken and orchestrate the various neuro-muscular processes into a coordinated ability to create premeditated tones and mechanical movements that translate as facile and aesthetic singing. Inevitably, a voice also has to be cultured to suit particular genres and styles. This is the secondary level of voice culture – better called moulding of the voice or moulding of the mechanical abilities and responses to suit a style.

  4. Broad steps in voice culture:
    1. Creating an awareness in the trainee that
    a. The human voice is a singing voice
    b. A person gifted with musical abilities has a naturally gifted voice apparatus and propensities that need to be unlocked, awakened and orchestrated.
    2. Understanding and experiencing the distinction between the communicative (speaking), expressive (laughing, crying, hooting), semi-expressive (shouting, calling) and singing voices.
    3. Understanding the concept and natural tenets of a collapsed or flaccid vocal apparatus and an erected apparatus ready to sing.
    4. Distinguishing between the tonal and mechanical dimensions of voice and voice training.
    5. Understanding and achieving production of tones across the range, including so called chest, mid and head tones.
    6. Understanding breathing and the relationship between breathing and singing in depth.
    7. Achieving tone production as extensions into phrases and musical lines and passages – songs and improvisation.
    8. Articulation – vowels and consonants – in the realms of speech and song.
    9. Reverse rationalization of existing musical styles and genres with the help of understanding of vocal hygiene and voice principles. This is especially applicable to classical music where the voice science enables us to appreciate the dynamics of pre-microphone voice culture – the era which determined the character of raga music. Voice culture the way I conceive and teach facilitates the analysis of older styles and cultures of singing as available in recordings of the pre-50s era and help us derive the timeless principles of Indian vocal music.

  5. The traditional principles of voice production in Carnatic music were excellent – that is why we have had great Indian voices that have manifested Indian music with such dramatic impact – MS, GNB, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, to name a few. One voice we lost in recent years – that of Sh. K.V.Narayanaswamy, was one of the most outstanding examples of how voice can be cultured and trained for the purpose of raga music. He did not possess a ringing tone. When he would start a concert, the tone would be almost breathy. But the principles of placement, mechanics and the principles of gamaka were outstanding – gamaka weaving into thaya or phrase. His manner of phrasing was classic – be it in Viriboni, Varugalamo, Krishna Nee Begane, Mayamma or Sri Subrahmanyana Namaste in Kambhoji. In this final Dikshitar kriti that I mention, listen to the final sangati in the pallavi – the manner in which he traverses clearly through each anuswaram that goes into the making of a gamaka in the rapid flow of a briga.

  12. Hi Sir, I have been watching Airtel Super Singer 2 from the beginning. The thing that amazes me and hooks me to the show is the progress that the kids have been making. I am especially astounded by the change in Priyanka's voice and attitude; Shravan's ambi-to-remo transformation (!!); little Shrikanth's improvement; Nithyashree softening her piercing voice when required; Bala opening up his voice, Srihari tackling his throat problems and so on. It's truly a great achievement, Sir. I'm most impressed.

  20. Hi everybody. I am guilty of not visiting my own blogspot for months. And now am charmed to see some life which got extinguised on June 24th.

    Live it up.

Frankly of late, I have lost the riveting desire that I had, to share my knowledge. I wish to move to a new level of understanding through practice, rather than teaching and thinking. I heard Balamuraliji sing with Ajoy Chakraborty for the DD golden jubilee at chennai. What an incredible voice the maestro has. He is like a rishi of voice - he just came with it in this birth.

I am glad to become a follower of your blog. I am one of those singers who have a good voice, enormous desire to sing, but caught in the whirl of corporate life due to family situations. I want to learn music in a proper way. I want to know about my voice levels and other technical things. Shortly, I am looking for a guru like you. I have seen how you have moulded singers in Vijay TV shows. I have great respect for you and your talents.

Will I get an opportunity to be your disciple? Do you stay in Chennai?

I live in Singapore and am a great fan of Airtel Super singer. I would be grateful if you can answer a question for me. My daughter has been learning carnatic music (vocal) for the past seven years. She is 14 yrs old now. Last year, she joined her school choir as an extracurricular activity. She enjoys the choir very much. But I'm concerned as to whether her choir singing will affect her carnatic music(vocal chords especially). She is an alto 1 singer in the choir. Thank you

Of late I have been watching Airtel super singer Program regularly and the way you, inspired, guided, and on the whole changed the participants' personality. i also read the article by shri. K.T.Jagannathan of The Hindu, in which i learned about the academic back ground and extensive research and experience during your life.
i learned carnatic music in young ages from the mother of Shri.Vijay siva, a known carnatic music singer in Chennai. My father asked the opinion of Shri.Vijay Siva about continuing when i reached 9th std. He advised to continue after completing academic studies, which was then to be given importance, in the immediate. I experience some difficulty in my present voice after Adulthood for higher pitches. i have been learning cine-music, for which the access was easy thru' TV and internet. I thought i can contact you sir, over phone. i could not get the contact number/s. I humbly request you to please mail me your number/s; my mail id is raghavancartes@gmail.com and ggagge@gmail.com
if you can please give me an appointment on Saturday or Sunday or in this week upto saturday all days i will be obliged and grateful.

  34. Ananth sir, after seeing your work with the contestants, especially with juniors in Super Singer, it reminds of something that Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam once said. It goes like this...

Someone asked him who are the most important people in shaping a child's future and he replied instantly with such great clarity of thought that (in the order of priority) it is Mother, Father and Elementary school teacher. *Note* The important word ELEMENTARY! And he said if the elementary school teacher does his/her job what they are doing is CREATING MAGIC!

Just can't help but say that you are performing such great magic in shaping the voice of such talent. Wow! Your service just like that elementary school teacher's job. Keep creating magic. God bless!

  36. Dear Ananth Sir,

I am a class XII student. I recently participated in Airtel Super Singer senior 4 (26/12/2012) held at Asiana Hotel, Semmenchery. I had sent the CD and got selected. I am a reasonably good singer from a musically talented family. I have nearly 5 years of Carnatic experience and participate in school programs. My thatha is Carnatic singer, Trichur V. Ramachandran (my mother's chitthappa). So all my family members have a flair for music. In the second round at Semmenchery, my judge was Sowmya mam. I was very happy that since she is a reputed singer, she will listen to my song and give good feedback. But unfortunately, her attitude was not that great. I had practiced 'mayakkum malai pozhudhe nee poo poo' and few other songs. I am sure i sang reasonably well, but i got eliminated. In fact i wanted to meet you and ask your opinion on my singing, but I didnt know how to approach you there. In fact i saw you there. I very much want to meet you in person and know your opinion regarding my singing talent. Tell me how i can contact you sir. I will be very grateful.

I am an aspiring singer...in fact, I have put in several years of practice so far. One issue is that when I practice in the morning (around 7 AM or so), my voice is not as smooth and easy as it is in the afternoon/evening times. I find it hard to reach higher octaves in the morning than later in the day. Is this normal ? Is there any way I can attain the same level of fluency in the mornings as well?
